Three years ago it became possible to register domains in Estonia ending in .ee. Recent data suggest that there are already 71,070 of these domains registered including 1,250 of them where Estonian diacritics are used.
In addition, the new procedures of the domain registration in Estonia which were entered into force in March, 2013 enabled the registration of domains ending in .ee for a three year period. During the first four months more than 500 domains have been registered for a two-year period, and more than 700 domains for a three-year period. However, it appears that the renewals of the previously existing domain registration were more frequent than the applications for the new registration. After comparing 2012 and 2013, we can conclude that in 2013 approximately 1,130 .ee domains were registered per month which is 13% more than in 2012.
Also, due to the fact that the Estonian Internet Foundation supervising the registration of the Estonian domains decided to reduce the prices of the registration by 20%, the growth of the domain registration is likely to increase more. Domains will be able to be registered for a one, two or three-year period, and the registration price will be 12 EUR (42 LTL 39 cents), 23 EUR (79 LTL 34 cents) and 33 EUR (113 LTL 84 cents) respectively. These prices will take effect on 1st January, 2014.
Finland is the leading country in terms of the number of domains registered per thousand people. To specify, there are 59.7 national domains ending in .fi per thousand people. Estonia is the second in this category being only slightly different from its neighbouring country (54.4 domains ending in .ee). Meanwhile, in Latvia there are 52.5 domains ending in .lv per thousand people, whereas Lithuania has 51.7 of them ending in .lt.
